Guardian of Heritage and Pillar of Wisdom in Ranya

In the heart of Ranya, known as the “Gateway of the Uprising,” the name of Sheikh Hamza Abbas Agha Mamand stands out as one of those figures who bridge the prestige of history with the challenges of the present. He is not merely a tribal leader, but the continuation of the “Abbas Agha Mamand” school, a name long associated with generosity, courage, and reconciliation.

Heir to Historic Leadership

Sheikh Hamza is the son of the late distinguished tribal leader Abbas Agha Mamand, who was a foundational pillar in Kurdistan’s social and political history. Born in 1953, Sheikh Hamza learned in his father’s diwan that leadership is not status but service to the people. He has since become the family’s distinguished face and a stabilizing force in the region for resolving disputes and unifying voices.

The Ako Tribe: Fortress of Men and Mountains of Pride

The Ako tribe is one of the oldest and largest Kurdish tribes, numbering approximately forty thousand families, with a deep-rooted history distinguished by chivalric pride. The tribe is spread across strategic areas stretching from the Batwein Plain and the city of Ranya, through the valleys of Balangan and Sarkpakan, to Sangsaw, Haji Omaran, and the rugged mountain regions bordering the Qandil and Rawanduz mountains.

The sons of Ako have been known as protectors of the land, playing pivotal roles in all Kurdish liberation movements. The diwan of Abbas Mamand in Ranya has always been a destination for anyone in need.

Sheikh Hamza, Beloved by All

A Man of Balance: He possesses a remarkable ability to reconcile tribal tradition with the demands of the modern era. Sheikh Hamza was elected as a member of the Iraqi Council of Representatives, serving his people from 1984 to 1988.

Political and Social Activity: He has been known for his efforts to unify the Kurdish ranks, consistently emphasizing in his statements the importance of Kurdish national unity and the necessity of seizing historical opportunities to achieve justice for this people, deeply rooted in this land since ancient times.

Sheikh Hamza Abbas the Social Reformer: He finds no rest until he has resolved any social dispute in his region, relying on the language of reason and wisdom. His positive and effective intervention is historically documented during the 1991 Uprising crisis involving detained high-ranking Iraqi army officers, who were hosted in the tribal diwan. A wise and appropriate resolution to that crisis was reached in cooperation with the late President Jalal Talabani.

A House of Generosity: His diwan in Ranya remains open to all, embodying the authentic Kurdish values of hospitality inherited across generations.

In Closing

The presence of figures like Sheikh Hamza Abbas Agha Mamand is a guarantee of social stability. It is worth noting that Sheikh Hamza has two sons, Mohammad Hamza Agha and Abbas Hamza Agha, both well-known businessmen and industrialists in the Kurdistan Region and Iraq at large. They are recognized for their integrity, sound judgment, and wisdom, and are a continuation of their father’s path, itself drawn by the late grandfather Abbas Agha Mamand for this noble family in service to their tribe and the people of their region, drawing wisdom from their father and his exceptional ability to maintain balance and favor reason and logic in resolving disputes.
